Student Safety in the Workplace Transition Unit

Young people aged 15 – 19 at highest risk of accident or injury in the workplace.

The health and safety transition unit ‘Student Safety in the Workplace’ introduces students to the principles of workplace safety and health. It is aimed at Transition Year students  (and other senior cycle students) as a preparation for the world of work and is particularly relevant for those undertaking some form of work experience. The unit is relevant to all students as future members of the work force.

Research shows that over 50% of 15 - 16 year olds in school are already in some form of work and that the accident injury rate for 15 – 19 year olds is higher than for any other age category.

The programme is structured as a 45 hour course and the resources include:

  1. Our Choose Safety teacher and student workbooks
  2. Choose Safety DVD
  3. An e-learning module “Get Safe – Work Safe. Workplace Health and Safety for Senior Cycle Students”. This course is 90 minutes in duration and can be taken over the internet. This course is currently available at www.alison.com/hsa

The Transition Unit aims to provide students with basic health and safety training as they go into the workplace both on work experience and through part time employment. All resources are provided free of charge to schools taking part in the programme. The programme is fully ratified by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NCCA).

Full details of the unit can be viewed in the Student Safety in the Workplace (Transition Unit) Pdf

The Health and Safety Authority believes that through education we can foster a culture of safety and health and through this programme aims to equip students with a basic skill set which should help them to keep safe in the workplace, know how to protect themselves and those around them, and therefore  reducing the number of workplace accidents. They will then carry that forward into their future working lives.
