Hibernian and Sisk lead the way in EU health and safety awards

The Health and Safety Authority today (Thursday 16th October) announced the winners of the national Good Practice Awards 2008.  Hibernian Insurance and John Sisk and Son Ltd have won the Irish leg of this EU-wide competition and will now go forward to compete with a range of organisations from all across Europe.

According to Martin O’Halloran, Chief Executive of the Health and Safety Authority, “I’m very pleased to announce Hibernian Insurance and John Sisk and Son Ltd as the two Irish winners for this prestigious European competition.  Both organisations have displayed a proactive and innovative approach to reducing workplace accidents and have clearly demonstrated that employee safety, health and welfare is an integral part of their operations.”

“This years Good Practice Awards was particularly competitive.  We received a wide variety of entries of very high quality and the selection process proved to be a difficult task.  Both Hibernian and John Sisk and Son are worthy winners of the Irish leg and I wish them every success at the EU stage of the competition,” added O’Halloran.

The Good Practice Awards is a major European competition aimed at encouraging best practice in relation to employee health and safety.  The theme for this years awards was risk assessment - the key to reducing workplace accidents and illnesses and the start of the risk management process.  The campaign is organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work in cooperation with the member states.
