Reminder about Pressurised Road Tankers

Pressure is used in a wide range of road tankers to discharge their product. Such vehicles constitute work equipment and are subject to the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application), Regulations,1993 which were amended in 2001.

Under these regulations such equipment is subject to periodic examination, and, where appropriate testing by a competent person. The results of these inspections have to be recorded and kept available for HSA inspection for 5 years from the date of inspection. The examination relates to the integrity of the tanker and safety devices provided for its protection. These provisions will continue when the revised “General Application” Regulations (S.I. No. 299 of 2007) come into force in November.

The periodicity of inspection is addressed in national legislation for the transport of dangerous goods by road [ADR] but for other substances the period shall be determined by the competent person, taking into account any instructions from the manufacturer.
