    Many serious accidents involving vehicles or mobile equipment occur each year in the workplace. These workplace transport accidents often involve either reversing vehicles, slow speed manoeuvres, falls from vehicles, vehicle runaways, objects falling from vehicles, coupling and uncoupling activity, overturning vehicles or vehicle maintenance. Trucks, vans, lift trucks, cars, powered mobile equipment and other specialist vehicles present particular risks. People can be protected from vehicle risks in the workplace by ensuring that safe vehicles are operated by safe drivers in a safe workplace.

    Course duration: 45 minutes

    Learning outcomes:

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • Outline the key considerations for a safe workplace arrangements that support the safe movement of vehicles and pedestrians
    • Outline the key considerations when choosing, using, working with and maintaining vehicles in the workplace
    • Outline the key safe work procedures and rules that support workplace transport safety
    • Outline the key risk management and supervision steps to achieve a safe workplace for vehicle activities

    CPD points: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points are available from Construction Industry Registry Ireland (CIRI) for this course. One hour of learning will contribute to one CIRI CPD point. Any construction company wishing to avail of the CIRI CPD points must record them as learning outcomes on their own training matrix which then needs to be presented annually to CIRI at the point of renewal.

    This short course deals with keeping of safe vehicles in the workplace. It highlights the importance of using vehicles that are safe, suitable and fit for purpose for the tasks and environment in which they are used. The course also covers basic vehicle pre-use checks, standards, servicing and vehicle repairs.

    Course duration: 30 minutes

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • Outline the importance of using vehicles that are safe, suitable and fit for purpose for the tasks and environment in which they are used
    • Outline the main vehicle safety features to consider in vehicle selection process

  • High Risk Vehicle Activities

    In this course you will learn more about common high risk vehicle activities that can cause harm to persons in the workplace. You will also learn how to reduce these risks when carrying out these activities.

    Learning outcomes:

    On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

    • Outline basic requirements for all drivers
    • Understand the role of management and supervisors in ensuring rules and procedures are followed
    • Identify good practices in relation to reversing and parking, safe loading and unloading, and tipping bulk loads from open vehicles
    • Identify practices to ensure that covering, uncovering, coupling, uncoupling and trimming are carried out safely
    • Understand driver and managerial duties and responsibilities

  • A Short Course for Safety Representatives

    Course Image

    This course is designed for new and existing safety representatives. It is also suitable for employers, employees, safety committee members and health and safety practitioners. The aim of the course is to raise awareness of the role of a safety representative, and to provide health and safety information relevant to this role.

    This course does not replace training but provides information that may be useful as part of the training process.

    This short course for safety representatives is supported by ICTU and IBEC.
