National Conference on Farm Safety to Take Place in Mullingar on Thursday 3rd November 2016

To date in 2016, there have been 14 people killed in farm accidents in Ireland.
On Thursday 3rd November the Health and Safety Authority and Teagasc, with the support of FBD and the Farm Safety Partnership, will host a ‘National Conference on Farm Safety and Health’ from 9:30am to 1:00pm at the Mullingar Park Hotel in Co. Westmeath.
Farmers and safety professionals from all over the country will share ideas and prevention strategies on how to best reduce injury and death on farms.
Peter Gohery, IFA member from Co. Galway, will speak the on impact of his farm accident and how it affected his life and farming.
Attendees will also hear from Professor Jim Phelan, Chair of the Farm Safety Partnership about how farm safety strategies have developed over the years and what is now required to make sustainable improvements. Professor Tom Kelly, Director of Knowledge Transfer from Teagasc will speak about how to integrate farm safety and health into knowledge transfer on the ground.
Michael Noble from Mental Health Ireland will speak about building resilience and the importance of mental health. Dr John McNamara from Teagasc will present a paper on how to put safety theory into practice. Frances McArdle from Height for Hire will give a talk on new equipment available to farmers for working safely at height.
The first session of the conference will be chaired by Richard Kennedy, Deputy President of the IFA, with the second session chaired by John Comer, President ICMSA. The Questions and Answers session at the end will be run by Sean Finan, President of Macra Na Feirme.
This conference qualifies as a Dept. of Agriculture, Food and Marine approved 'Knowledge Transfer' event for discussion group members in all farming enterprises - dairy, cattle, sheep, poultry and pigs.
Following a light lunch there will be a number of outdoor exhibits on matching tractor size with farm machinery & equipment, along with a demo of a height for hire unit.
