“Keep Safe” road show comes to Ballinasloe school children

Over one hundred primary school children from Creagh National School (NS), Ballinasloe NS and Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh have attended a Health and Safety Authority ‘Keep Safe’ event at Emerald Ballroom, Ballinasloe.
Eleven state agencies and organisations came together to deliver the programme which is directed at 5th and 6th class pupils in the school. It aims to promote safety and community awareness through involving the children in a series of interactive scenarios with a strong safety theme.
Speaking at the event, Maria King, Inspector with the Health and Safety Authority said, “It was wonderful to see so many primary school children and their teachers attend this safety awareness event. The Health and Safety Authority created the Keep Safe programme to be an entertaining and interactive way for children to have fun while learning. We cover topics like safety around water, road safety, fire safety and more. The children are so interested and we hope that the discussion will carry on back in their homes, schools and communities.”
The aims of the one day ‘Keep Safe’ event are to help children to:
- become aware of personal and home safety,
- learn how to react to dangerous situations,
- foster good citizenship,
- learn how to recognise hazards and manage risks,
- learn how to stay safe within the context of, for example, road safety, water safety, fire safety and site safety.
The agencies and organisations that were represented on the day include the Health and Safety Authority, ESB Networks, Garda Siochana, Civil Defence, Irish Farmers Association, Irish Water Safety, RNLI ,Green Schools, Bus Eireann, Croi and local Fire Services.
