Safety Representatives Resource Book - Information and How to Use

Introduction

This is the fourth edition of the Safety Representative Resource Book, replacing the previous edition.

There are two versions of the Safety Representatives Resource Book

  • eBook (interactive)
  • Print version

This edition features an eBook format. There is some new content, including information on:

  • Safety and health management
  • New and emerging workplace safety and health themes, topics, and challenges
  • Vulnerable workers
  • Communication skills
  • Workplace safety and health training

The book is divided into ten parts, with each part containing several related chapters. Each chapter includes:

  • Basic definitions
  • Data and statistics
  • Relevant thematic content organised into different sections
  • Action checklists and questions
  • Signposting to HSA resources and additional reference materials

Using the Two Versions of the Safety Representatives Resource Book

The eBook version has built-in navigation tools, while the print PDF is intentionally static.

The eBook is designed for easy movement between chapters and sections and to help readers easily access signposted content. It has working hyperlinks, side menus, and top navigation. Clicking a menu or chapter link jumps you directly there. Select the side navigation (on the left) to move around the chapter. Select the top navigation to move to different parts of the eBook. The eBook also features a search function, enabling you to enter keywords and navigate straight to the relevant pages.

The print version is optimised for printing and provides a clean, non-interactive layout. It does not include navigation menus or hyperlinks. Please download this version if you need a printer-friendly format.

eBook: How In-Content Links Behave

The behaviour of hyperlinks in the eBook depends on how you are viewing it:

  1. Downloading the PDF (Recommended)
  • If you download the eBook and open it in a PDF reader (e.g., Adobe Acrobat or Preview), all in-content links will open in a new browser tab or window.
  • To return to the eBook, simply switch back to your PDF viewer—there is no need to use the Back button.
  1. Viewing in Your Browser
  • If you view the eBook in your Browser and click an in-content link, the webpage will open in the same browser window.
  • To return to the eBook, you need to click the browser’s Back button.
  • Tip: If you select a hyperlink using Ctrl + click, it will open the webpage in a new tab or window, allowing you to keep the eBook open.

Please note that most PDF readers include an internal Back button, usually near the top:

  • Adobe Acrobat: a small left-arrow “Go to Previous View”
  • Browser PDF viewers: sometimes “Alt + Left Arrow”
  • Apple Preview: “Go Back” in the menu

For the smoothest reading experience and full interactive functionality, we recommend downloading the eBook.

eBook: How the Search Function Works

To find specific content, use the search function and type in a keyword. A list of results will appear, allowing you to navigate directly to the relevant pages in the eBook.
